Questions Pertaining to Propane Hybrid Heat Pump Systems:
What is a Propane Hybrid Heat Pump?
A Propane Hybrid Heat Pump adds a Propane Tankless Water and Hydronic Coil (within the Propane Hybrid Heat Pump) to your existing or new electric Heat Pump system. The Propane Hybrid Heat Pump sits atop an air handler. The Propane Hybrid Heat Pump works by sending hot water to the hydronic coil (within the Propane Hybrid Heat Pump) to warm the air drawn in by the electric Heat Pump, which the Air Handler then blows throughout the home. This Propane Hybrid Heat Pump rebate DOES NOT apply to a propane furnace.
Do I Have to Install a New Propane Tankless Water Heater?
Yes, the propane hybrid heat pump only works when installed with a New Propane Tankless Water Heater. The propane water heater, installed with the hybrid heat pump, provides both hot water and space heating for the home. To receive the propane hybrid heat pump rebate, two applications must be submitted at the same time (Both Propane Hybrid Heat Pump AND Propane Tankless Water Heater)
How does the Propane Hybrid Heat Pump work?
The Propane Hybrid Heat Pump sits atop an air handler. The Propane Hybrid Heat Pump works by sending hot water to the hydronic coil (within the Propane Hybrid Heat Pump) to warm the air, where the Air Handler blows the warm air throughout the home.
What is an Air Handler?
An air handler is the indoor unit that moves warm or cool air through your home using a blower, filter, and ductwork. In a propane hybrid heat pump system, when temperatures outside dip below 40 Degrees, the air handler circulates air generated by the heat pump and the hydronic coil, which is heated by a propane tankless water heater, throughout the home.
Questions Pertaining to What/Who Qualifies for the Rebate:
Which appliance do I need to install to qualify for my propane hybrid heat pump rebate?
The only appliance that will be accepted to go with your new propane hybrid heat pump is a New Propane Tankless Water Heater. Both applications must be completed at the same time to receive rebates. A hybrid heat pump rebate submitted on its own will be denied.
What is the total amount I receive for completing this rebate submission?
Because the new propane hybrid heat pump rebate requires a propane tankless water heater, you will need to complete 2 forms. Both rebates are $300 each; if your applications are approved, you will receive $600 in total. If you are replacing an existing propane water heater with a new unit, you will receive a $150 water heater rebate instead. This means the total you will receive is $450.
Does my propane hybrid heat pump or tankless water heater have to be new and Energy Star certified to qualify for the Rebate?
The units installed must be new, meaning they have not been used in any prior installation, but they do not need to be Energy Star Certified.
Is the Rebate available to non-profits and businesses?
Yes, non-profits, businesses, and homeowners in Ohio qualify for the rebate.
Does warranty work qualify for the Rebate?
No, the unit needs to be a new purchase. Warranty work is a replacement of the original unit purchased; therefore, it does not qualify.
Can the rebate be combined with utility incentives or federal tax credits?
Yes, the rebate amount can be stacked with other utility, state, and federal incentives.
Questions Pertaining to Installation:
Does my installer need to be licensed to qualify for the Rebate?
Yes, your installer must be licensed by the state of Ohio to install your propane hybrid heat pump and tankless water heater and to perform a safety inspection.
My installer does not have a licensed number because they do not need to be licensed by the state of Ohio. Do I still qualify for the Rebate?
Yes, however, you will need your propane company to come out and perform the Propane Safety Inspection (Section 5) and sign at the bottom of page two as the “Safety Inspector.”
I’m a homeowner and will install the propane hybrid heat pump and tankless water heater myself, but I’m not a licensed installer. Do I still qualify for the Rebate?
Yes, as a homeowner, you can install the unit yourself and still qualify. However, the Propane Safety Inspection (Section 5) must be performed by your propane supplier. Section 4 (licensed installer info) should be labeled “Self-Installed.”
I am building a new house and need a heat pump and water heater. Do I qualify for the Rebate?
Yes, the rebate is available for both existing homes and new constructions. The installation of the propane hybrid heat pump and connected propane tankless water heater must be fully completed in 2026.
Questions Pertaining to Submitting Rebate Applications:
What is a “Propane Company Work Order”?
This is a document that should be provided by your propane provider. It details trenching a new propane line from an existing propane tank to your new appliance. If this is a new build or the home is new to propane, the work order should also detail the installation of a new propane tank on the homeowner’s property. This document is not required for propane-to-propane installs.
How many forms do I need to fill out for the Propane Hybrid Heat Pump Rebate?
You need to complete and submit 2 forms at the same time:
- The 2026 Propane Hybrid Heat Pump Safe Installation Rebate Application (Green-colored application)
- And the 2026 Propane Water Heater Safe Installation Rebate Application (Yellow-colored application).
Both forms require 2 additional documents:
- a paid-in-full receipt or invoice,
- and a propane company work order.
Is there a deadline for submitting my rebate application to receive my check?
Yes, your 2026 application must be postmarked, emailed, or faxed by December 31, 2026, 11:59 pm EST.
I installed a heat pump/water heater in December, and I don’t think I will make the deadline of December 31, 2026, 11:59 pm EST. Can I still submit my 2026 application?
